The makers of Combat Cards, a card game that is played in
Second Life, have taken an innovative approach to creating
a new expansion based on the players and setting of an
actual roleplay region in Second Life.

Doc Boffin and Osprey Therian, creators of Combat Cards
have worked closely with Vooper Werribee, owner of the
Splintered Rock Second Life region to produce a new set of
cards. Each card shows one of the roleplay characters
who plays at Splintered Rock.

Both Combat Cards and Splintered Rock have a long history
in Second Life. Combat Cards was first released in 2006
and at the time Doc Boffin was also a Linden employee
known as Babbage Linden. Splintered Rock was originally a
roleplay area based on the science fiction world of the
Dune novels by Frank Herbert. However, in 2008 lawyers for
The Herbert Estate requested the removal of any Dune
intellectual property from Second Life.

Vooper Werribee (real life name: Darren Green) said, "The
Splintered Rock set of cards shows that we have moved on
from the 'Dune issue' and benefit from the incredible
creativity and originality of roleplayers in Second Life.
The cards do a great job of showcasing that. Osprey worked
incredibly hard with each player to get a picture that
captured the 'heart and soul' of their character and the
new set of cards is a fantastic way to let people know
about the style and setting of the roleplay on Splintered
Rock. I'm thrilled to be involved in this!"

This method of producing a new expansion for Combat Cards
illustrates the flexibility that is available to developers
of virtual games. The creators of Combat Cards may take a
similar approach to their next expansion, perhaps featuring
another Second Life roleplaying region. There is also the
possibility of producing customised cards on request.

However, one final task remains before the Splintered
Rock set of Combat Cards can be released:
The new cards all need names.
If you would like to help name the cards then send an IM
in Second Life with your suggested card name to Vooper
Werribee. It also a chance to make a few Linden
Dollars as L$200 will be paid for each card name that
is used.

Today’s Event

Today’s event was really fun! I took exactly ZERO pictures, but Sidney, Magic, Wavemaster, Magic, and I all fought each other for both Demo and Custom tournaments. We now use a system whereby each person fights every other person and keeps track of the score: wins=2, draws=1, and losses=0. We manage to get a lot of fighting in, and especially so today as the Demo results were a three way tie – Magnek, Magic, and me. We fought again – 3-way tie again. We fought AGAIN – 3-way tie AGAIN. Finally we just accepted that and moved on to Custom (where I got trounced, having used up all my energy on Demo).

Wave hadn’t fought in ages but did really well despite that, and will be up to speed in no time if he plays a bit.

Reskinning for Splintered Rock

As Splintered Rock is a role-play area, I’m reskinning the Fantasy series to stay in keeping with its spice-mining, futuristic theme and feature the avatars one might meet there. There’s an open-to-anyone tournament on Saturday at 1pm, during which I’ll be taking pictures of the locals. This will be my second session – for the fruits of the first see the Splintered Rock blog. I’ve left naming up to the players themselves, and I hear there might be a contest built around it.

Arena Modding

Because the displays “map” to the numbered prims in the linkset, if you change the linkset you need to make sure the link numbers specified in “Settings” is still correct. The (annoying) linkset number reporter script tells you what a prim number is when you touch that prim – remove or turn off that script when it’s not needed as it’s annoying X10

Anyone who’d like to gain a passing familiarity with the robot cards before the release can get a deck/beta cards and/or Robot Demo from Doc’s sooper sekret exploding test arena in Europa. It is clearly marked.

As well as poweful hits at a cost of heat build-up, Robot cards have shields – which reverse the opponents attack INCLUDING REGEN i.e. a player employing a Robot high shield against the Scottish card not only wounds the opponent but also GAINS 4 health points.

Doc very much wants to hear opinions on Robots – how powerful they are against the other series cards (there’s the heat liability, the huge attacks, the split block that is great against discard attacks, plus this regen thing).

Robot Series Release!

Join us at 2pm on the 31 October as Doc and I host a Robot release event. There are 18 free beta cards – enough choices to build a killer deck from.
Wear your best futuristic attire; tournament details later (when we know ‘em ourselves). Wall-to-wall fighting will be the order of the day!

Tiny decks and robot demo decks will be available, of course.

A quiet day…

…but Mich, Sid, and I played some very nice Custom matches, and the blood flew! One match between Sid and Mich pitted decks heavy with discard attacks against each other, and I’m not sure I’ve ever seen so many cards go by in one match. All in all it was a lot of fun - unexpected, too, as I hadn’t thought my ‘net would be back up by then.

ZOMG Robo Demos in Testing Now

Things have been a little quiet on the blog, however we’ve been busy in our slow but inexorable way. The newest blip on the horizon is the Robot Demo Deck, currently being tested at Europa. You can do a little testing yourself if you’ve a mind to: left click Doc’s testing arena (the one with the warnings) to get the Demos from the menu. The Robot Demo works only on that arena, as it’s all been recoded, but you can fight there anytime using Robot and any other deck. Saturdays at 3pm is our current testing event time. Have thoughts, gamepla ideas, possible bugs to squash? Write it on a notecard and drop it on us – an IM to get our attention is great!

Robot gameplay is a bit different, and balances hard second tier attacks with the need to release heat build-up by drawing or playing a small attack. While predictabilty leads to some vulnerability, the split defense serves well against discard attacks in particular. The first cards are HERE. The battery is the good resource, while heat, shown as a thermometer icon, is something you don’t want. The first card on the way to a big attack, with a split mid/low defense. Note that it creates 1 battery resource, but can only be played with less than 1 heat resource.

A big low attack with high/mid defence creates 1 heat resource.

Player can draw or use a small attack (shown here) while heat dissipates.
